Evelyn Patricia Terry celebrates Wisconsin-made papers in a four-piece grouping titled, The Monumental Series. She used her printing press to assemble each composition on four large handmade paper sheets created by Steve Bruton, then a Wisconsin master papermaker. Combined with Bruton’s papers using wheat paste were colored Inks, thread, cotton-based papers from selected Wisconsin mills, and importantly, handmade paper, recycled older drawings, and prints on 100% rag paper – produced by Terry. Drawings, prints, and milled papers were torn to create deckle edges. They were then sewn together and collaged via the Chine-collé print inking process resulting in non-objective/abstract mixed media monotypes enhanced by individual titles.

Evocative titles intuit life as an emotional undertaking. Terry said, “The Monumental Series embraces aesthetic exploration and rapture when exterior and/or interior forces disrupt one’s existence and force obstacle-crushing moments that yield art.”

Titles of the individual pieces of The Monumental Series are:

The Monumental Quiet – The Yearning

The Monumental Quest – The Seeking

The Monumental Peace – The Releasing

The Monumental Movement – The Soaring

The Monumental Series is part of the original art from the Burke Collection donated to the Midwest Express Center in 1998.

About Evelyn Patricia Terry

Evelyn Patricia Terry, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin native, designed her version of “The American Dream,” as she emerged into a full-time professional visual artist after earning an MFA in 1985. With nearly six decades dedicated to the arts, her creations grace over 500 public, private, and corporate collections nationwide and in Japan. Since 1970, Terry has captivated audiences through collaborations with galleries, art consultants, and museums. In 2014, her partnership with Vamp and Tramp Booksellers, Ltd launched her unique artist book series into major University Library Special Collections across the United States and additionally into the celebrated Cynthia Sears Book Collection in Bainbridge Island, Washington, and the prestigious Smithsonian Art Museum’s American Art and Portrait Gallery Library in Washington, DC.

Fearlessly exploring figurative and non-objective styles, Terry’s original prints, pastels, installations, paintings, assemblages, collages, and public artwork delves unflinchingly into diverse media and themes. Her accolades include a “purchase award,” from the National Black Arts Festival, Atlanta, Georgia, for a watermelon pastel drawing; an Intermedia/McKnight Interdisciplinary Fellowship, Minneapolis, Minnesota; and a Milwaukee County Fellowship, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. These recognitions preceded two distinguished honors, a 2012 Wisconsin Visual Artist Lifetime Achievement Award and a 2014 Milwaukee Arts Board Artist of the Year Award.

Terry’s journey includes earning three printmaking degrees: a BFA and MS from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Fine Arts and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her creative odyssey continues to inspire and resonate with audiences worldwide.
